Emergency services in Nantes have brought the fire in the city's Cathedral of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul under control as of 12:30 (local time). The damage to the building is reportedly less significant than initially feared, with the main organ destroyed and stained glass windows being blown out. Prosecutor Pierre Sennes has stated that authorities are treating the fire as a criminal act, with evidence showing that three fires had been deliberately started in the cathedral. He did not give further details.
Local fire officials have stated that 104 firefighters remain at the scene to ensure that the blaze is fully extinguished. A continued disruption to transportation in and around central Nantes is to be expected as emergency services continue to work at the site.
Those in Nantes are advised to monitor developments and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
