As of Saturday, July 18, flooding in China has killed 141 people, displaced at least 38 million others, and destroyed more than 28,000 homes. The worst affected provinces lie along the Yangtze river, and include Jiangxi, Hubei, Fujian, Guangdong, Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan, Zhejiang, Chongqing, Hunan, and Anhui. All three floodgates in the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze have reportedly been opened, as the water level in the dam rose to 15m (50ft) above flood level. The army has been deployed to build barricades in affected areas, in an attempt to keep floodwaters at bay.

While season flooding is a common occurrence in China, the rainfall this year is reportedly the heaviest in 30 years. Further heavy rainfall is expected throughout next week, expecting to bring additional flooding, landslides, and associated disruptions.

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
