Nigeria News Alert

Suspected Boko Haram militants kill at least three farmers in Chibok local government area (Borno state) on July 18; further attacks possible in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/19/2020, 12:00 AM until 7/22/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Borno State, Nigeria, Mifa

Suspected Boko Haram militants launched an attack on the village of Boftari, located in the Chibok local government area of Borno state, on Saturday, July 18. Militants reportedly looted shops and razed several homes while shooting sporadically at the villagers. Local media reports state that at least three farmers were killed in the attack, while ten others were wounded.

Similar attacks are possible in Borno state in the near term.

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and Islamic State-West Africa Province (ISWAP). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.

Individuals in Borno state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
