At least eight people have been killed and six others are also feared to have died after a landslide occurred in Bukavu (South Kivu province) on Monday, July 20. The incident took place on Saїo Avenue in the Ndendere district of Ibanda commune at around 15:00 (local time). The landslide was triggered as local residents were constructing a wall in an area reportedly not fit for construction. In the wake of the incident, civil society organizations have demanded explanations from local authorities as to why plots and building permits continue to be granted on unviable sites for construction.
Residual disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the incident in the coming hours and days as response operations continue.
