Militants from the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) armed group killed eight civilians during an attack in the village of Mayolo in Djugu territory (Ituri province) on Tuesday, July 21. The militants reportedly shot villagers in their homes on Tuesday, and then returned to loot the village on Wednesday, July 22, after many residents had fled due to the previous attack.
Similar militant attacks and security operations are possible in the region over the near term.
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.
Those in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for rebel and militia activity, monitor developments, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
