Militants kill policeman in Kulgam district (Jammu and Kashmir territory) on July 22; further militant activity and security counter-operations likely over the near term

A policeman was shot dead by unidentified militants in Kulgam district (Jammu and Kashmir territory) on Wednesday, July 22. The policeman was left critically wounded following the shooting in the Mir Bazar area of Kulgam before succumbing to his wounds on his way to hospital. Security forces have launched an operation to track down the perpetrators of the shooting.

Police cordons and stop and search tactics are possible in Kulgam in the coming hours and days as security forces attempt to track down those responsible for the incidents. Clashes between security forces and militants are possible during the operations.


Individuals in Jammu and Kashmir territory are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

Some foreign governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Kashmir, notably including areas along the Line of Control (LoC), due to the significant risk of violence.
