On Thursday, July 23, at least 16 people were wounded in a blast which occurred at Turi Bazaar in the city of Parachinar (Kurram Agency, Khyber-Pakhtunkwa province). Media sources indicate that an improvised explosive device (IED) fitted inside a vegetable cart detonated on Thursday. Police and security personnel responded to the incident, cordoned off the area and launched a search operation for further devices. The wounded were taken to the local District Headquarters Hospital. No group claimed immediate responsibility for the attack.
Following the incident, reports suggest that residents in the area gathered outside the local press club to stage a protest, calling for the authorities to take further action against such incidents and increase security in the area. Overland disruptions were reported as protesters blocked the main highway.
Further associated protests may occur in the near term. Similar attacks are also possible in the region over the near term.
Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qai'da, Islamic State (IS) affiliates, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, the Afghan Taliban, and other Islamist militant groups continue to pose a threat in Pakistan's western border region despite continued military operations aimed at improving security in the area.
Those in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and Pakistan more generally, are advised to remain vigilant at all times and report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
