Port employees protest at Béjaïa Port on July 23; further protests possible over the near term

Employees at Béjaïa Port demonstrated for a fourth consecutive day on Thursday, July 23, calling for the immediate resignation of the port's CEO, Halim Kasmi. Reports on social media outlets indicate that the employees affiliated to the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) began demonstrating on Monday, July 20, and on Thursday they called for a four-day general strike beginning Friday, July 24.

Protests are expected to continue during the strike period and associated disruptions should be anticipated at the port. 


Individuals in Béjaïa are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate disruptions to business operations at the port, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
