The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced that Tropical Storm Hanna had formed in the Gulf of Mexico, late on Thursday, July 23, 620 km (385 miles) east-southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas. Tropical Storm Hanna had initially been named Tropical Depression Eight, before gathering enough strength to be classified as a named storm. Maximum sustained winds of 65 kph (40 mph) have been reported, as well as gusts of up to 80 kph (60 mph). The tropical storm is expected to make landfall on Saturday, July 25. A tropical storm warning is in effect in Texas between the mouth of the Rio Grande to the San Luis Pass, with a tropical storm watch between the San Luis Pass to High Island.

Strong winds, heavy rainfall and associated flooding, and dangerous seas are likely to affect southern Texas in the near term. Associated disruptions to transportation, power, communications, and business are to be expected. Further information on the storm can be found on the NHC website, here.

Those in areas forecast to be affected by the storm system are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
