On Saturday, July 25, the Nigerian military announced that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) had conducted airstrikes against suspected bandits in Zamfara State. Further air and ground operations against bandit positions are likely in the near term.

Context

In recent years, Zamfara State has faced problems with armed groups stealing cattle, kidnapping for ransom, and attacking villages, causing some communities in the state to form vigilante gangs. There has also been an increase in informal mining in the mineral-rich region, attracting outsiders and further fueling instability.

Advice

Those in Zamfara State are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
