United States of America News Alert

Clashes reported between security forces and anti-racism protesters in Seattle on July 25; avoid all demonstrations

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/27/2020, 12:00 AM until 7/31/2020, 11:59 PM (America/Los_Angeles). COUNTRY/REGION Seattle

Clashes between police forces and protesters were reported on Saturday, July 25, during anti-racism protests in Seattle. At least 47 arrests were made during the unrest and a total of 59 police officers were injured as a result of the clashes. Officers used non-lethal weapons, including rubber bullets and tear gas in efforts to disperse the protesters after attempting to set fire to a nearby juvenile detention center and courthouse.

The protest follows recently renewed energy with protests in Portland, Oregon, which has resulted in riots and clashes in the area.

A heightened security presence is anticipated in the vicinity of the demonstrations. Further protests likely.

Protests began worldwide after US citizen George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired and detained, and one has since been charged with second-degree murder. Protests have since spread to several cities across the US, with solidarity protests taking place throughout the world.

Individuals in Seattle are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
