Monsoon rains cause flooding and casualties in Karachi July 27; disruption to travel to be expected

On Monday, July 27, Pakistani authorities announced that at least eight people had been killed over the weekend amid heavy monsoon rains in Karachi. Most of the city is inundated, with some areas seeing nearly a meter (3 ft) of water accumulating. Power outages and severe disruptions to transportation have been reported. The worst affected areas are Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Ayesha Manzil, Baldia, Power House Chowrangi, Orangi Town, and Haideri. At least 12 people have been killed in Karachi since the monsoon season began.

Additional rainfall and flooding is expected in the region over the coming weeks as the monsoon season continues.  


Those in Karachi are advised to monitor local weather reports in the near term, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate power and transportation disruptions, and avoid wading or driving through floodwater.
