Police forces conducted a raid on a suspected militant hideout near Chilas in the Diamer district of the Gilgit-Baltistan region on Tuesday, July 28, which resulted in at least five fatalities and multiple people wounded. According to media sources, security personnel conducted the operation in Ronai village, near Chilas, at approximately 02:00 (local time) on Tuesday morning after receiving intelligence regarding the presence of suspected militants. An exchange of fire ensued between the police and suspects, resulting in at least five Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) officials killed and five others were wounded. Two civilians were also reportedly killed in crossfire during the incident.
Media sources suggest that residents in the area briefly blocked the Karakoram Highway later on Tuesday to protest the death of the two civilians killed in the crossfire. Reports indicate that the demonstration was dispersed by security forces as authorities assured the public they would begin investigations into the incident.
A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area in the near term, and further security operations and militant attacks are possible in the region.
Those in the area are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity, report any suspicious items and activity to police, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
