Residents set-up roadblocks in Wang Chau (New Territories) to protest a housing project on July 29; further protests and associated disruptions are possible over the near term

On Wednesday, July 29, residents of several villages in the Yuen Long district (New Territories) who are reportedly refusing to be evicted from their homes set up roadblocks to protest a housing project in Wang Chau (Yuen Long district). According to media sources, officials and construction workers arrived in Wang Chau on Wednesday morning to set up concrete blocks to block off the entrances and exits of the land to be cleared for the project. Residents of the Wing Ning Tsuen, Fung Chi Tsuen, and Yeung Uk San Tsuen villages in the Yuen Long area reportedly chased off the officials and construction workers, and then set up their own roadblocks allowing only local residents to move in and out. Associated disruptions in the area were reported in the area.

Further protest action against the controversial housing project and associated disruptions are possible in the near term.


Those in the area are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
