Sudan News Alert

Protesters gather in Kadugli and Abu Jubaiha (South Kordofan province) on July 28; avoid all protests as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/29/2020, 11:00 PM until 8/1/2020, 10:59 PM (Africa/Khartoum). COUNTRY/REGION South Kordofan

Demonstrators gathered in the Kadugli and Abu Jubaiha areas of South Kordofan province on Tuesday, July 28. Civil society activists in Kadugli reportedly gathered in front of the state government secretariat to protest against growing insecurity in the region, and to demand protection of agriculture. Separately, a sit-in demonstration also took place in Abu Jubaiha on Tuesday to demand better services and the removal of gold mining plants which allegedly use cyanide.

Further associated protests in the region and a heightened security presence are possible in the near term.

Those in South Kordofan province are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments, and avoid all protests due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence.
