DRC: Rebels carry out attacks in Beni territory (North Kivu province) July 28-29

DR Congo News Alert

Suspected ADF rebels kill eight in attacks in Beni territory (North Kivu province) on July 28 and 29; further attacks likely in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/30/2020, 12:00 AM until 8/1/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Kinshasa). COUNTRY/REGION North Kivu province, Beni

Suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels carried out two attacks in North Kivu's Beni territory on Tuesday evening, July 28, and Wednesday, July 29. On Tuesday, ADF gunmen attacked the village of Kainama, in the Beni-Mbau area of Beni, killing six civilians. The assailants also torched several homes, causing residents to flee into a nearby forest. On Wednesday, a soldier and a motorcyclist who was transporting him were killed after they ran into an ADF ambush in the Ruwenzori area of Beni.

Similar attacks are possible in the region over the near term, and a heightened security presence is likely in Beni in the immediate term.

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.

Those in North Kivu province are advised to remain vigilant for rebel and militia activity, monitor developments, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
