Hundreds of anti-racism protesters gather in Lisbon on July 31; associated demonstrations possible in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/1/2020, 12:00 AM until 8/3/2020, 11:59 PM (Europe/Lisbon). COUNTRY/REGION Portugal

Hundreds of anti-racism demonstrators gathered in Lisbon on Friday, July 31, to demand justice for Bruno Cande, a black actor who was shot dead last weekend. The demonstration passed off peacefully and no arrests or clashes were reported.

Further associated protests may occur in the near term.

Cande was reportedly shot several times by an elderly white man along Avenida de Moscavide in Moscavide on the outskirts of Lisbon. Cande's family have alleged that the suspect had threatened to kill him three days before the shooting took place and used racist slurs towards Cande.

Individuals in Lisbon are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
