The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) militant attack on a prison compound in the eastern city of Jalalabad (Nangarhar province), which began on Sunday, August 2, is reportedly still ongoing as of 13:30 (local time) on Monday, August 3, with at least 24 people having been killed. Among the dead are prisoners, civilians, prison guards, and Afghan security personnel. Three of the four ISKP attackers have reportedly been killed, however, unconfirmed reports state that the fourth is still engaged in an exchange of fire with security forces. Dozens of prisoners are reported to have escaped as a result of the attack, with operations to recapture them still ongoing. ISKP has claimed responsibility for the attack, which came on the final day of a truce between the Taliban and the government over the Eid al-Adha holiday period.
A heightened security presence is to be expected in Jalalabad while operations are ongoing.
Those in Nangarhar province are advised to avoid the affected area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
