India: Curfew imposed in Jammu and Kashmir territory through August 5

India News Alert

Indian government imposes full curfew in Jammu and Kashmir territory through August 5; ongoing heightened security presence

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/4/2020, 12:00 AM until 8/6/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Calcutta). COUNTRY/REGION India

The Indian government has imposed a full curfew in Jammu and Kashmir territory through Wednesday, August 5. The full curfew means that people are only allowed to move around with an official pass, which is usually reserved for essential personnel like emergency services. The curfew was imposed due to the upcoming first year anniversary of the abolition of article 370 on August 5, which revoked the territory's special status and stripped Jammu and Kashmir's semi-autonomy.

A heightened security presence and an increase in military operations are anticipated in Jammu and Kashmir territory over the coming days and weeks. Protests opposing the increased security measures are possible despite the curfew.

Individuals in Jammu and Kashmir territory are advised to monitor developments to the situation and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

Some Western governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Kashmir, notably including areas along the Line of Control (LoC), due to the significant risk of violence.
