Several political events and associated protests are scheduled to occur in Conakry on Wednesday, August 5, and Thursday, August 6, as the ruling Rassemblement Pour le Peuple de Guinee (RPG) picks its candidate for the 2020 presidential elections. The event will be held on Wednesday and Thursday at the RPG headquarters in Matoto, Airport District.
Additionally, the opposition FNDC (Front National Pour La Defense Constitution) has called for a demonstration on August 6, to coincide with the RPG event, stating that the convention is part of a plan to reelect current President Alpha Conde for the third term.
An increased security presence is likely in the capital during the events, bringing an increased risk of clashes between demonstrators and security forces. Previous related demonstrations took place on July 20, which resulted in injuries to at least 20 people and dozens of arrests.
Those in Guinea, particularly in Conakry, are advised to monitor developments avoid all protests and political gatherings, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
