DRC: Pro-government demonstration staged in Bukavu on August 4

DR Congo News Alert

Pro-government groups stage large demonstration in Bukavu on August 4; residual disruption and further gatherings likely in near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/4/2020, 12:00 AM until 8/6/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Kinshasa). COUNTRY/REGION Bukavu

More than 5000 supporters of the ruling Common Front for Congo (FCC) party staged a major demonstration in the South Kivu province city of Bukavu on Tuesday, August 4, voicing support for the government and the country's state institutions. The gathering began at Place Mulamba in the Ibanda area of the city before marching to the offices of the provincial governor in the Nyamoma area. The demonstration drew a significant security presence but there were no immediate reports of any significant unrest.

Residual disruptions are likely in the Nyamoma area in the near term. There remains a realistic possibility of further protests in the medium term.

FCC supporters have staged several demonstrations in recent weeks in support of former president Joseph Kabila, calling on current President Félix Tshisekedi to maintain the institutions established by his predecessor and not to delay elections currently scheduled for 2023.

Those in Bukavu and other areas of the DRC are advised to monitor developments, anticipate disruptions in the vicinity of demonstrations, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
