Event

A grenade blast during a rally in Karachi (Sindh province) on Wednesday, August 5, has injured at least 39 people. Two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle threw a grenade at the crowd before fleeing the vicinity of the gathering, which was occurring near the Bait-ul-Mukarram Masjid in the Gulshan-i-Iqbal area of the city. One person is in critical condition, and whilst others were taken to hospital for treatment, most victims sustained minor injuries. Police arrived at the scene of the attack and cordoned off the area while investigations take place. The Sindhudesh Revolutionary Army (SRA) later claimed responsibility for the attack on social media. The rally was part of a series of nationwide events held to commemorate Youm-i-Istehsal, the anniversary of the Indian government's revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status.

Heightened security and localized transport and business disruptions are likely in the impact area in the near term.

Context

The Sindhudesh Revolutionary Army (SRA) is a separatist group that calls for Sindh's secession from Pakistan and has previously carried out a number of low-intensity attacks. In recent months the group has become more active. It claimed responsibility for three consecutive explosions on June 19, which resulted in the deaths of four people, including two soldiers, in Karachi and in Ghotki district.

Advice

Those in Karachi are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
