Event

Thousands of demonstrators took part in a protest in Jerusalem on Saturday, August 8, against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. At least 15,000 protesters gathered in a square near the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem amid a heightened security presence, and police later arrested at least three people on public order charges. Another gathering of 1000 people occurred outside of Netanyahu's private residence in Caesarea. Protests also occurred at a number of bridges and highway junctions across the country, including in Tel Aviv. Saturday's demonstration in Jerusalem is one of the largest rallies to have taken place in recent weeks to demand Netanyahu's resignation and to denounce his government's management of the economy during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Continued protests are to be expected in Israel in the near term.

Context

Protests have been reported throughout Israel, particularly in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, in recent weeks over the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Anger over the issue has been compounded by pre-existing anti-Netanyahu sentiment, with the Prime Minister facing three criminal cases over alleged corruption.

Advice

Individuals in Israel are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
