Egypt News Alert

Protests are possible following the death of senior Muslim Brotherhood leader in Cairo on August 13; anticipate large gatherings and a heightened security presence

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/12/2020, 11:00 PM until 8/15/2020, 10:59 PM (Africa/Cairo). COUNTRY/REGION Egypt, Cairo

A senior Muslim Brotherhood leader, Essam al-Erian, died in prison in Cairo on Thursday, August 13, following an apparent heart attack. Essam's death could trigger protests and commemorative gatherings as supporters gather to mourn his death and voice opposition to the government's ongoing crackdown on the organization.

Protests are possible in the coming days following Essam's death, and a heightened security presence is possible across urban centers.

Egyptian authorities consider the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization and have cracked down heavily on its supporters.

Essam was serving life in prison for charges relating to his alleged role in the 2013 coup that ousted former president Mohamad Morsi, among other charges.

Essam once served as vice president of the Freedom and Justice Party, the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Those in Egypt are advised to avoid any protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, allow ample travel time, and obey instructions issued by local authorities.
