Armed men shot dead a member of the Federal Ministerial Police and wounded another in the Villas de San Juan neighborhood of Leon (Guanajuato state) on Wednesday, August 12. The shooting took place on Pyxis Street at the corner of Galena Boulevard, a short distance from the National Guard building, at around 14:30 (local time). The officers were carrying out field work in the area when they were attacked. The National Guard fired shots in retaliation, but the perpetrators escaped and as of late Wednesday no arrests had been made following the incident. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the area in the near term.
Those in Guanajuato state are advised to monitor developments, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
Due to violence linked to the presence of various armed groups, some Western governments advise against travel to various parts of Mexico, notably the states of Guerrero, Michoacán, and Tamaulipas, as well as the northeastern border with the US.
