Approximately 300 ethnic Mongolian herders protested in Dorbod banner (Ulanqab region; Inner Mongolia) on Thursday, August 13, over Chinese government-backed plans to build several large pig farms in the region. Unconfirmed media sources suggest that the demonstrators gathered in front of the local government building, with some protesters attempting to enter the premises. Police reportedly blocked the marching herders from entering and beat at least three protesters. The demonstration reportedly came as a response to an announcement by Chinese authorities of a new policy which will permit animal farming industries to appropriate land without an approval process. A second demonstration involving over 100 herders also took place Thursday afternoon (local time).
Further associated protests over the issue are possible in the area in the medium term.
Those in Dorbod banner are advised to monitor the situation for developments, avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
