At least nine pro-government fighters, including a senior officer, were reportedly killed on Sunday, August 16, amid clashes with Houthi rebels in the northwestern Al-Jawf governorate. The soldiers are reported to have been killed whilst participating in an operation to recapture positions lost to the rebels several months ago, but it is currently unclear exactly where the clashes occurred.
The fighting came as pro-government forces launched an offensive against Houthi fighters in several areas of Al-Jawf and the Nihm region, with several vehicles reported to have been destroyed and rebels pushed back from positions in the Najd al-Ataq and Salb areas. Clashes have also been reported around Marib, where two pro-government soldiers were killed in a Houthi ballistic missile attack on Sunday.
Further military operations and retaliatory attacks are likely in the around Al-Jawf and other areas in the near term.
Due to poor security conditions, many Western governments strongly advise their citizens against all travel to Yemen. Travel to the country should only be considered with proper security protocols in place. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
