The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed that an airstrike was conducted against Al-Shabaab forces in the Kurtunwarey district (Lower Shabelle region) on Thursday, August 20. The airstrike reportedly targeted and killed a militant with a history of working with explosives. AFRICOM has assessed that no civilians were killed or injured in the strike.
Further military operations against Al-Shabaab fighters, as well as attacks by Al-Shabaab, are possible throughout Somalia in the near term.
US Africa Command, in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, routinely targets Al-Shabaab forces as well as compounds to disrupt militant operations. Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large areas of southern and central Somalia and stages frequent attacks across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the UN-backed government.
Individuals in Somalia are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
