Event

Hundreds of protesters gathered in central Nairobi on Friday, August 21, to protest against the alleged mismanagement and theft of funds intended for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) relief measures. The protest was scheduled to start at 08:00 (local time) at Uhuru Park with demonstrators marching towards the Office of the President. Police rejected the official letter of notice for the demonstration. Police officers have responded and fired teargas to disperse protesters. Reports indicate that disruption spilled into the Central Business District where anti-riot police arrested and dispersed activists who demanded the arrest of allegedly corrupt government officials.

A heightened security presence and disruption in the vicinity of the rally is expected. Further associated protests are possible in the near term.

Advice

Those in Nairobi are advised to monitor developments, avoid all gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
