Kenya News Alert

Doctors strike in Nairobi on August 21; avoid all gatherings as a precaution

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/21/2020, 12:00 AM until 8/23/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Nairobi). COUNTRY/REGION Nairobi

Doctors from the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists' Union went on strike in Nairobi on Friday, August 21, from 00:01 (local time) over issues including delayed salaries, inadequate health insurance, and work safety conditions during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, including a lack of protective equipment. According to media sources, approximately 320 doctors from public hospitals in the capital and employed by the local county government are taking part in the strike, however, reports also indicate that hospitals, both private and public, run by the national government will not be affected.

Potential disruption to medical services in Nairobi during the strike should be accounted for and medical appointments should be confirmed. Associated protests have not been announced, however, likely gathering points include hospitals and medical facilities.

Those in Nairobi are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate potential disruptions to the provision of medical services, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, and confirm medical appointments.
