A roadside improvised explosive device (IED) targeted the Yaqshid District Commissioner in Abdiaziz district (Banaadir region) on Sunday, August 23. The commissioner, Muse Gesey, was unhurt in the blast despite his vehicle being badly damaged. However, reports indicate that at least two civilians were killed, and several others wounded as a result of the blast. Responsibility for the attack was not immediately claimed, but Gesey reportedly survived a similar bomb attack several weeks ago for which Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for.
Localized disruptions are likely in Abdiaziz area in the near term.
Those in Banaadir are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
