A stampede killed at least 13 people at a nightclub in Lima's Los Olivos area on Saturday evening, August 22, as police intervened to enforce coronavirus disease (COVID-19) measures. Reports indicate that around 120 clubgoers attempted to escape the nightclub through a single exit after tear gas was used by police in attempts to break up a party, causing the stampede. Nine others, including three police officers, were injured in the incident, and authorities detained 23 people.
Localized disruptions are likely in Los Olivos in the immediate term as recovery operations take place. A heightened security presence is also likely.
Peru ordered the closure of nightclubs and bars in March amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and also banned extended family gatherings on August 12. An indefinite nationwide curfew is in place between the hours of 22:00 and 04:00 (local time) Monday to Saturday, and an indefinite all day Sunday curfew is also in effect until 04:00 on Mondays.
Those in Lima are advised to avoid adhere to measures imposed by authorities and follow official directives. A heightened sense of situational awareness should be maintained at all times.
