At least one person was killed and over 4000 households have been damaged or inundated in northern provinces due to severe flooding triggered by torrential rainfall from the passing of Tropical Storm Higos as of Sunday, August 23. Reports indicate that Chiang Mai was affected as well as the NanPhayao, Lampang, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, and Phitsanulok provinces were among those affected in the northern region. Wiang Sa in Nan province was reportedly the hardest-hit district. Many roads have become impassable and disaster mitigation officials and security forces have deployed military trucks and flatboats to assist those in affected regions, including evacuating people to safe ground.

According to meteorological officials, further heavy rainfall remains possible in northern provinces bordering Myanmar through Monday, August 24. Disruptions to travel and infrastructure are anticipated over the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate continuing disruptions, and never drive or walk through flooded streets. Floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products and present residual health hazards.
