Hong Kong: Demonstrations possible in Wan Chai on August 24

Hong Kong, SAR China News Alert

Demonstrators to potentially gather in Wan Chai (Hong Kong island) on August 24; anticipate a heightened security presence

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/24/2020, 12:00 AM until 8/26/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Hong_Kong). COUNTRY/REGION Hong Kong

Demonstrators may gather at O'Brien Road Footbridge in Wan Chai (Hong Kong island) on Monday, August 24, despite announcing that they have shifted activities online. The demonstration was set to commence at 18:00 (local time), and some participants may still gather near the footbridge and Revenue Tower. A ban remains in place on public gatherings, and therefore arrests and clashes between protesters and the police are possible. It was not immediately clear why the action was called for, but recent protests have centered around the recently implemented controversial national security law.

A heightened police presence and localized disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the gathering.

Those in Hong Kong are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, allow additional travel time in city centres, and heed all instructions issued by local authorities.
