Nigeria News Alert

Ongoing protest reported at Wuse Market (Abuja) on August 25; avoid all demonstrations

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/25/2020, 12:00 AM until 8/26/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Abuja

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) are reported to be protesting at Wuse Market in Abuja on Tuesday, August 25, as part of the Ashura mourning, an annual event of the group to commemorate the death of Prophet Muhammed's grandson Imam Hussein in the Battle of Karbala. The procession is reported to be marching towards the Berger Area. Although the march is reported to be passing off peacefully, previously associated demonstrations have often seen clashes between members of IMN and local security forces.

A heightened security presence and localized travel disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of the march.

Those in Abuja should avoid the vicinity of any political gatherings to lessen the chances of being affected by incidental violence and police operations. Members should monitor local media sources for further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities.
