Protests against gender-based violence planned in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Pretoria on August 29

Activists have called for several demonstrations against gender-based violence in South Africa on Saturday, August 29. In Johannesburg, participants plan to gather at the Commission of Gender Equality at 12:00 (local time) before marching to Constitution Hill.  A similar rally is also scheduled to take place in Cape Town, starting at 11:00 outside the Parliament building. In Pretoria, protesters are due to gather at 11:00 at the Union Buildings Gardens. While in Durban demonstrators will gather at 11:00 at the Durban Beachfront before marching to the Durban City Hall. Associated demonstrations are possible in other urban centers nationwide.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected near the protest sites. Further protests are likely in the coming days. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.  


Individuals in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Pretoria are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
