Event

On Tuesday, August 25, Nigerian officials announced the capture of at least 150 suspected bandits in Zamfara State by soldiers operating under Operation Sahel Sanity. The raid, which took place on Sunday, August 23, targeted an illegal mining site at Gadan Zaima, along the Gadan Zaima - Zuru Road in the Bukuyyum Local Government Area. At least one bandit was killed during the raid. Security forces also recovered arms and ammunition at the site.

Further bandit attacks and operations by security forces are likely in Zamfara State in the near term.

Context

In recent years, Zamfara State has faced problems with armed groups stealing cattle, kidnapping for ransom, and attacking villages, causing some communities in the state to form vigilante gangs. There has also been an increase in informal mining in the mineral-rich region, attracting outsiders and further fueling instability.

Advice

Those in Zamfara State are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex and professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
