Two-storey banquet venue collapses killing at least 17 in Xiangfen county (Shanxi province) on August 29; residual disruption expected over the near term

At least 17 people have been killed after a restaurant collapsed in Linfen (Xiangfen county; Shanxi province) on Saturday, August 29. The two-storey building used for banquets came down on Saturday morning. Around 700 people have been involved in the rescue operation and as of Saturday afternoon 45 people had been extracted from the rubble, including the 17 dead and seven others with serious injuries. It is not yet clear what caused the building to collapse, although construction collapses are not uncommon in China.

Residual disruption to overland transportation is expected in the area over the near term as response and clean-up operations take place.


Members in Xiangfen county are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the vicinity of the incident over the near term, and adhere to all directives issued by local authorities.
