At approximately 21:19 (local time) on Saturday, August 29, a rocket was reported to have impacted in the vicinity of the Dutch Embassy in Baghdad's International Zone. There were no immediate reports of casualties in relation to the incident. Open sources have claimed that an additional three rockets were fired but that remains unconfirmed at the time of reporting.
A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area over the near term as security forces carry out investigations. Further attacks against Western targets in Iraq cannot be ruled out.
The incident comes following two separate reports of rocket fire within hours of one another in Baghdad on Thursday, August 27, and Friday, August 28. Yesterday's incident has been attributed to pro-Iranian hard-line Shia militias. Further rocket attacks are probable as US-Iranian tensions remain elevated.
Individuals in Baghdad are advised to closely monitor the situation, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
