Unidentified gunmen killed two students and a teacher, and kidnapped several teachers, in Masisi territory (North Kivu province) on Thursday, August 27. The attackers reportedly targeted military and police personnel who were moving to the Ngoyi Primary School to secure it for examinations. Students and teachers fled into the bush following the attack and it is unclear if those killed were intentionally targeted or if they were caught in the crossfire.
Further attacks and security operations are likely in the area in the near term.
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.
Individuals in North Kivu province are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
