Youths blocked a highway in Nakuru county in a protest over unemployment on Monday, August 31. The demonstrators blocked a section of the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway for a number of hours on Monday to show their dissatisfaction at a lack of employment opportunities provided to locals during a recent railway project. The demonstration by youths from the village of Jikaze spilled on to the highway and blocked traffic in the area. Clashes were reported between protesters and security forces and three of the demonstrators were arrested.

Further unrest over the issue is possible in the near term as protesters vowed to continue to air their grievances until their concerns were addressed.

Those in Nakuru county should be aware of the risk of further unrest and are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all large public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
