Event

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.5-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Atacama region some 95km (59mi) northwest of Vallenar on Tuesday, September 1. The quake struck at 18:09 (local time) at a depth of 14km (9mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued. The quake comes following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck in the same area at 00:09 on Tuesday which was followed by a number of aftershocks of varying intensities.

Further aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
