Residents in Karachi are to protest on Saturday, September 5, over the government's response to the damages caused to the city by waterlogging following days of heavy rainfall. Major roads and highways have experienced severe traffic jams across the city leading to lengthy delays. Power outages have been reported in some areas of the city and, according to Karachi Electric, electricity connections have been suspended in several areas as a precautionary measure. Residents of the Defense Housing Authority (DHA) will protest outside of the DHA Phase-I Office at 12:30 (local time) over the slow restoration of power and other services.
Monsoon rains and associated flooding have caused disruption and casualties throughout Pakistan in recent weeks. At least 90 deaths have been reported, with 1000 homes damaged. Troops have been deployed in Karachi and other affected areas of the country to assist residents.
Further rainfall is expected throughout Pakistan over the near term. Disruptions to transportation and business are to be expected while rains continue.
The country's monsoon season from July through September regularly brings heavy rains, which at times can completely flood the Indus River Basin which runs roughly north to south through the country. Such flooding can prove catastrophic and can result in casualties numbering in the thousands. In general, the country has yet to adequately address the monsoon flooding issue, and national flooding disasters remain common. These events, in addition to high death tolls, can also wipe out major infrastructure and render the country's vital road network impassable. More mountainous areas can experience severe landslides, which have a similar consequence for road networks there.

Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
