Event

Police in Lalitpur (Bagmati Pradesh province) utilized tear gas and water cannon to disperse a religious rally that was taking place on Thursday, September 3, due to it being a violation of the current government ban on public gatherings imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Despite the ban, around 2000 participants gathered to pull a chariot of the rain god, Rato Machhindranath, a ritual that has been celebrated for generations. The participants reportedly threw rocks at baton-wielding police and set a police motorcycle on fire. An injured person was carried away by police. A heightened security presence and residual travel disruptions should be anticipated in the area.

Related protests in the coming days cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Those in the area are advised to monitor developments, minimize time spent in the vicinity of the unrest, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
