Bandits ambush local vigilante group in Niger state on September 2; further clashes likely

Bandits reportedly ambushed a local vigilante group in Dukku village in Rijau Local Government Area (Niger state) on the evening of Wednesday, September 2, killing at least 17 people. Over 120 gunmen on motorbikes raided the village following the ambush. Local media sources report that three of the bandits were killed in the clash. Nigerian officials have confirmed the attack and have notified residents that additional security forces will be deployed to the region to ensure their protection. 

A heightened security presence is to be expected in Niger state over the near term. Continued bandit attacks in the region are likely.
