Police have launched a murder investigation after an assailant killed one man and wounded seven other people in a series of stabbings in central Birmingham at 00:30 (local time) on Sunday, September 6. Police announced that the first attack occurred at Constitution Hill before the attacker moved on to Irving Street and Hurst Street, where the final stabbing took place at 02:20. Police have stated that they do not believe that the attack had motivations linked to terrorism, gang violence, or unrest, and the victims appear to have been randomly targeted.

Continued road closures in the vicinity are to be anticipated in the immediate term, along with a heightened security presence as investigations continue.
