At least ten Taliban militants were killed by security forces on Saturday, September 5, in clashes which took place in Shah Wali Kot district (Kandahar province). According to media sources, the militants attacked security forces on Saturday night (local time), however, they were able to repel the assault killing multiple fighters and destroying several vehicles in the attack. There have been no immediate confirmed reports of security forces casualties. The Taliban is yet to comment on the attack.
Similar attacks targeting security forces are expected across Afghanistan over the near term.
Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.
Those in Afghanistan are advised to avoid the affected areas, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
