Nigeria: Doctors’ union to begin indefinite nationwide strike September 7

Nigeria News Alert

Doctors’ union plan indefinite nationwide strike to begin on September 7; anticipate disruptions to medical services, avoid all associated demonstrations

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/6/2020, 12:00 AM until 9/14/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Nigeria

Event

An indefinite nationwide strike has been planned by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to begin on Monday, September 7. The strike has been planned over better pay and benefits and is expected to begin from 08:00 (local time). According to media sources, additional health sector unions including the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) have also threatened to strike over similar issues.

Associated demonstrations are possible during the strike action, with medical facilities, hospitals, and government buildings likely hotspot locations. The strike action is likely to affect medical services at healthcare facilities and hospitals; emergency care services will likely still be available.

Context

The National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) represents approximately 40 percent of the doctors in Nigeria. The union went on strike in June, claiming that low salaries, a lack of basic health material in state hospitals, and increasing fuel costs had severely hindered their ability to provide adequate services.

Advice

Personnel in the country are advised that medical assistance may be unavailable during the aforementioned period. Travelers are advised to review their contingency plans in light of the industrial action and ensure that alternative medical provisions are in place during their time in country.
