Torrential rainfall across Senegal led to six fatalities in flood-related incidents between Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6. Two deaths occurred in the Koalack region, two in the Sédhiou region, and two in the capital Dakar. At least one person was also reported missing in Ndiafatte (Kaolack region) as the country registered more rain in one day than it would normally register throughout the entire three-month rainy season. President Macky Sall activated an emergency aid plan due to the flooding on Sunday.
Further rains and thunderstorms are to be anticipated in the coming days, along with disruptions to transportation, utilities, and business.
Those in Senegal are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
