Somalia: Mortar fire hits multiple areas in central Mogadishu September 10

Somalia News Alert

Multiple mortar strikes reported in vicinity of Villa Somalia on September 10; possibility of further indirect fire in near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/10/2020, 12:00 AM until 9/12/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Mogadishu

Event

At least seven mortar rounds reportedly hit in and around Villa Somalia in central Mogadishu on the evening of Thursday, September 10. It is currently unclear whether there have been any casualties or significant damage from the indirect fire, but local sources reported that several civilian properties in the Hamarweyne, Wardhigleey, Shangaani, and Hamar-Jajab neighborhoods were hit by mortar rounds. Other reports stated that at least some of the explosions may have been the result of sound bombs detonated in the Boondhere District.

There remains a realistic possibility of further indirect fire attacks in the capital in the near term.

Context

Although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, Al-Shabaab militants launch infrequent indirect fire attacks on government and international targets in Mogadishu, particularly Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) and the Villa Somalia complex. Such mortar attacks are generally inaccurate but often cause significant collateral damage in areas surrounding the targeted facilities.

Advice

Those in Mogadishu are advised to avoid the area around Villa Somalia in the immediate term, monitor local sources for further updates on the incident, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
